Toronto Maple Leafs 2024-25 Season Review

The 2024–25 season was a rollercoaster for the Toronto Maple Leafs. After a strong regular season under new head coach Craig Berube, the team secured a second-place finish in the Atlantic Division with 52 wins. They overcame the Ottawa Senators in the first round of the playoffs but fell to the Florida Panthers in a hard-fought seven-game series in the second round. This review evaluates the team's performance across all positions as the team now moves into the 2025 offseason.

Forwards

Mitch Marner
Regular Season: 81 GP, 27 G, 102 PTS, +18, 14 PIM, 21:19 TOI, 40 Blocked shots, 49 hits

Analysis: Marner reached the 100-point milestone for the first time, capping off a season that further cemented his status as one of the NHL's top playmakers. His postseason production rebounded after a disappointing 3-point showing in seven games the previous year against Boston. Marner is heading into the offseason as a UFA, and it is likely that he leaves Toronto.

William Nylander
Regular Season: 82 GP, 45 G, 84 PTS, +10, 26 PIM, 19:31 TOI, 27 Blocked shots, 14 hits
Playoffs: 13 GP, 6 G, 15 PTS, -3, 4 PIM, 19:06 TOI, 7 Blocked shots, 7 hits

Playoffs: 13 GP, 5 G, 7 PTS, -6, 10 PIM, 18:33 TOI, 14 Blocked shots, 22 hits
Analysis: Tavares ended his seven-year contract with a strong season, netting his highest goal total since 2019. He finishes his term in Toronto with 222 goals and 493 points in 515 games. There is still a chance that the Maple Leafs re-sign Tavares as he has expressed interest in staying in Toronto.

The Toronto Maple Leafs showed resilience and growth during the 2024–25 season, posting strong numbers in the regular season and getting past the first round in the playoffs. However, familiar frustrations returned as the team fell short in Round 2, raising questions about the core’s long-term playoff potential. With key decisions looming around contracts and cap space, the Leafs must now strike a balance between continuity and change to finally take the next step.
